Ecolabel certification: Evaluation of aquatic toxicity
The EU Ecolabel is a European environmental label that identifies products with reduced impacts on the environment throughout their life cycles.
The new EU Ecolabel criteria defined by Commission Decision n°2014/893/EU obligate an evaluation of the biodegradability and the aquatic toxicity of the majority of a product’s ingredients. To calculate the critical dilution volume (CDV), any ingredients not included in the Detergents Ingredients Database must be tested for:
Acute toxicity on aquatic organisms:
– OECD 201 for algae
– OECD 202 for crustaceans (Daphnia magna)
– OECD 203 for fish
to determine EC50 or LC50
Chronic toxicity on aquatic organisms:
– OECD 211 for crustaceans (Daphnia magna)
– OECD 215 for fish
to determine NOEC or EC10.
Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradability:
– aerobic: OECD 301
– anaerobic: OECD 311
IRM can help you with the aquatic toxicity tests necessary to calculate the CDV and with the constitution of EU Ecolabel dossiers for your cosmetic products.
